One of the requirements to working in Canada is a Social Insurance Number (SIN). This nine-digit number is used in the administration of government programs, to receive government benefits such as Employment Insurance or the Canada Pension Plan, and as identification.

When applying for a SIN card, proof-of-identity is needed. Each time you apply for a SIN card, you must provide a primary document and a supporting document if the name you are now using is different from the name on your primary document.

Your SIN is private and personal. Your employer will need to know your SIN so that deductions can be paid to the government for you. Always keep your SIN private, like a Personal Identification Number (PIN) on a bank or credit card. Never lend your SIN to anyone, and never borrow someone’s SIN to get a job.

You can apply for a card in person at a Service Canada centre, online or by mail.
