Newcomer Services

The following publications, organizations and services are provided to help welcome you to Edmonton. This includes settlement services, employment services and assistance in finding a place to stay once you have arrived. Many of these services are availalbe in multiple languages so you can speak to someone in your own language.

Welcome to Alberta

Alberta Human Resources and Employment produced a 65-page english document titled Welcome to Alberta. It provides an overview of information for adult immigrants who have just moved to Alberta, or are interested in settling in Alberta. Included in this document is general information to help newcomers learn about the following subject matters: where to get help, living in Alberta, money and banking, employment, education, healthcare, and the legal system.

This  document is also available in eight different languages at the Alberta Association of Immigrant Serving Agencies.


AccesEmploi

Acces Emploi provides employment search assistance to Francophone and French speaking people in the Greater Edmonton area. The Acces Emploi centre offers a variety of services including counseling and career planning, resume writing, translation and interpretation services, intensive job search workshops, English classes and workplace training programs.

ASSIST: (Formerly Edmonton Chinese Community Services Centre)

ASSIST provides services in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Chiuchow, Vietnamese, Korean, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, and Arabic, including help with job opportunities, English Language training, Family & children services, interpretation & translation services (Chinese/English), various upgrading courses, housing, transportation, social benefits, rights and obligations, education, employment, health care,  workshops & seminars.

Bredin Institute

The Bredin Institute offers a number of programs that assist newcomers to Canada. Their services include assisting immigrants to become established members of Canadian society, to help adjust, adapt and integrate in the Edmonton community, to promote cultural sensitivity and to provide bridging programs, employment search programming, licensure and credentialing assistance, communication and language training, mentoring opportunities and job placement assistance.

Catholic Social Services

Catholic Social Services is dedicated to improving the quality of life for persons of all faiths and cultures by serving their social, emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual needs.  Their multilingual and culturally diverse staff provide English language assessment, settlement assistance, educational/career planning, intercultural/cross-cultural education, opportunities to meet Canadian friends, outreach services for youth and seniors, volunteer opportunities and more.  CSS also produces the "Directory of ESL Programs and Services".

Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers

The EMCN provides programs for Newcomers to Edmonton around English Language Services, Community Services (for example family and youth programs, community development and health and wellness) and Career Development Services.  The EMCN can provide services in many languages and it may be very helpful to call them as someone may be able to speak to you in your language of choice.

Millwoods Welcome Centre for Immigrants

The Millwoods Wecome Centre for Immigrants works with immigrants to help them settle in their new community by providing various services and programs. The Welcome Centre for Immigrants was established in 1998, and was initiated by the Indo-Canadian Women's Association. Settlement assistance, language and educational counseling, employment assistance, and citizenship and english classes are all available.

Newcomers Club of Edmonton

The Newcomers Club of Edmonton is for woman and their families who have been in Edmonton for less than two years. We offer many programs including a Moms n’ Tots which meets every Thursday morning.
