Whether you are renting an apartment or living in a detached house or duplex, you will most likely be responsible for opening accounts and paying for gas and power services.

The Utilities industry in Alberta includes: electric power generation, transmission and distribution; natural gas distribution; and water, sewer and irrigation systems. Whether you are renting an apartment or living in a detached house or duplex, you will most likely be responsible for opening accounts and paying for gas and power services.

If you prefer to stay on regulated service or decide on regulated service for a new site, then the regulated rate electricity and natural gas providers in your area will sell energy to you. If you decide you want to buy from a competitive retailer, you can compare each competitive retailer's offers and sign a contract with the company of your choice.

Renters should check with their landlords for details about which utilities they need to pay, and home owners are responsible for hooking up electrical power, natural gas (for heating), and water.

Unless you can present two pieces of identification, an initial deposit may be charged to ensure you pay your bills on time. It will be refunded after approximately 12 months of payments made on time or when you move, whichever comes first. Required identification includes Alberta Health Care Insurance and an Alberta driver’s license. You can open an account with your passport, but a deposit fee will apply.
